About PTSD and complex PTSD training courses for therapists
The mental and behavioural condition known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the closely related complex PTSD, can present distinctive challenges to mental health professionals seeking to make sensitive and appropriate therapeutic interventions.
PTSD, formerly often referred to as ‘shell shock’ or even ‘battle fatigue syndrome’, is an anxiety disorder that can develop when a person experiences a highly stressful, frightening or distressing event. Examples of such events include – but are not necessarily limited to – being subject to violent assault, childbirth experiences, and serious road accidents.
The symptoms of PTSD – which can arise immediately after the sufferer witnesses a traumatic event, or even weeks, months or years later – may include involuntarily and vividly reliving the event in the form of nightmares and flashbacks, as well as emotional numbing and avoidance behaviour, and hyperarousal manifesting in physical symptoms such as irritability and angry outbursts.
Complex PTSD – sometimes abbreviated to CPTSD or c-PTSD – is a much newer term. There has long been a debate as to whether it can be regarded as a form of PTSD or is best considered an entirely separate condition. Nonetheless, complex PTSD is generally understood to be a condition characterised by some symptoms of PTSD, accompanied by additional symptoms, such as difficulty controlling emotions or constant feelings of hopelessness or emptiness.
Our broad range of courses for therapists wishing to assist PTSD and complex PTSD patients will equip you to develop effective models for treatment.
