Attachment & the Healing of Intimate Relationships: Video Course – USA

Attachment & the Healing of Intimate Relationships: Video Course – USA

As therapists across modalities, we regularly view deterioration in intimate couple relationships through the lens of attachment. However, a lot of our work is post-facto – when the cracks have already appeared. Also, often we may not be considering the whole gamut of potential underlying causes that range from Trauma Bonds to societal conditioning of masculinity – which have overlapping and complex interplays with attachment dynamics; a deeper understanding of which could immensely enhance our therapeutic endeavours.

Full course information

Unlike most training programmes that focus on post-facto resolution / acceptance – this webinar is specifically designed to help us understand the underlying causative factors that can lead to the atrophy of intimate relationships. We view these causative factors specifically through attachment and consider their inter-relationships with a view to guiding our clients towards awareness, repair and connection.

Two of the world’s leading experts on attachment theory and couple relationships respectively, come together at this high-octane, intellectually stimulating seminar to discuss:

  • What recent and past essential evidence from attachment research tells us about adult pair bonding and the making and breaking of attachment bonds in intimate relationships
  • How this research intersects with social stereotypes and folklore about intimate partner relationships – aggression by male partners may often result from masculinity conditioning for example – and how these may be affected by social and cultural gender related beliefs
  • How attachment styles not just influence relationship development, but also create preconditions for conflict, violence and aggression in some cases – also impacting the resolution pathways
  • How repeat victimisation plus risk factors including addictions, social skills deficits and anger manifest in extreme insecurity of attachment; which in turn is a strong predictor of intimate partner violence
  • How relationship injuries have a cumulative effect caused through emotional and verbal abuse, increasing the difficulty of the restoration process

Having enhanced our familiarity with these factors, the workshop then utilises case vignettes to explain specific therapeutic models for working with couples where ‘things have gone wrong’, including:

  • Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) – the non-pathologising humanistic approach that works in tandem with Attachment Theory. EFT allows us to connect childhood history and relationship dynamics and is acclaimed as being most empirically validated for couple work
  • Schema Therapy – the interpersonal approach that focusses on conflict patterns, avoiding undue focus on specific disagreements. This method allows us to identify and shift core beliefs and behaviours, in a way that the couple can assist each other through the therapeutic process
  • Mindfulness Therapy to develop distress tolerance, emotion regulation and healthy communication. Bringing this therapy into the mix has demonstrated efficacy in creating relationship satisfaction
