Parts Work and EMDR Therapy: A Powerful Integration for Your Most Challenging Cases

Parts Work and EMDR Therapy: A Powerful Integration for Your Most Challenging Cases

Every therapist knows that moment: when traditional interventions falter.

  • Anxiety resists cognitive restructuring
  • Depression lifts briefly only to return, and
  • Perfectionism bends but doesn’t break

These moments challenge us to look deeper—not for signs of resistance, but for the protective mechanisms shaping these patterns. Looking carefully, we may find that these struggles are not obstacles to change but invitations to work with the divided parts of the self. For many clients, these struggles reflect profound internal conflicts rooted in protective strategies developed to navigate adversity. These patterns often stem from opposing forces within the psyche: an inner critic striving for perfection, a pleaser seeking safety in approval, or a protector defending against vulnerability. These adaptations, while once essential, often create emotional fragmentation, leaving clients feeling stuck in cycles of self-criticism, detachment, or self-sabotage.

Full course information

In this innovative six-hour training, delivered across two evenings, Dr Arielle Schwartz offers a comprehensive framework for addressing these dynamics. By integrating EMDR with Parts Work therapies drawn from Gestalt, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and the Structural Dissociation model, this training equips clinicians to work effectively with challenging cases. We will explore the neurobiology of trauma and fragmentation, learn techniques to stabilise clients’ emotional arousal, and develop strategies to engage parts safely and productively.

Specifically, we will learn to:

  • Understand emotional dysregulation as a “part”
  • Adapt EMDR protocols for dissociation and fragmentation
  • Apply dyadic resourcing techniques to build stability
  • Build allies within the internal system

Why Even Excellent Therapy Can Stall
Why do some clients seem to make progress only to find themselves stuck in recurring patterns? The high-achiever who knows their anxiety stems from perfectionism but can’t break free. The individual cycling through depression despite coping strategies. The people-pleaser who sees their patterns clearly but struggles to assert boundaries.

These are not signs of resistance; they reflect adaptive strategies created by protective parts of the self. For example, perfectionism may stem from an inner critic determined to ensure safety through success. People-pleasing might reflect a protector part striving to avoid rejection. Therapy stalls when these parts remain unaddressed, leaving the underlying fragmentation unresolved.

This training introduces a nuanced approach to these challenges. By weaving together the structured precision of EMDR and the relational depth of parts work, we will discover how to address emotional dysregulation, shame, and internal conflicts, fostering deeper and more sustainable change.

Evening One: Understanding Complex Patterns and Anchoring the Self
The first evening lays the foundation for integrating EMDR and parts work, offering insights into trauma-related fragmentation and techniques for stabilisation.

  • Explore the neurobiology of developmental trauma and fragmentation: Understand how chronic stress and relational injuries shape neural networks, creating encapsulated ego states
  • Understand dissociation and “fragmentation” through the lens of Polyvagal theory: Learn how the nervous system adapts to trauma, leading to emotional dysregulation and self-division
  • Recognise the role of co-regulation and social engagement: Discover why connection is central to healing relational trauma, and explore alternatives when social isn’t safe
  • Work with shame to create spacious relational awareness: Develop strategies to help clients navigate shame and self-criticism, anchoring them in their adult self.
  • Identify ego states and defences: Learn to recognise the protective functions of parts like the inner critic, pleaser, and self-aggressor, and foster collaboration within the self.

Through these foundational skills, you’ll build a safe therapeutic environment, setting the stage for deeper interventions.

Evening Two: Integration in Action—Parts Work Meets EMDR
The second evening focuses on integrating parts work into EMDR protocols to address complex client presentations with precision and care.

  • Understand emotional dysregulation as a “part”: Learn to differentiate between symptoms and protective functions, allowing clients to build relationships with their parts.
  • Adapt EMDR protocols for dissociation and fragmentation: Discover how to modify traditional approaches to meet the needs of clients with encapsulated ego states.
  • Facilitate internal collaboration and repair scenarios: Use techniques to help clients reconcile conflicts between parts, fostering self-compassion and integration.
  • Apply dyadic resourcing techniques to build stability: Explore advanced safety protocols, including pendulation and positive state installation, to guide clients through processing.
  • Harness bilateral stimulation for internal dialogue: Learn how EMDR’s unique elements can enhance communication between parts, creating pathways for healing.
  • Build allies within the internal system: Help clients identify the unmet needs of their parts and transform resistance into collaboration.

These practical tools will prepare you to work with even the most entrenched patterns, fostering profound and lasting change.

Case Applications: Theory Comes to Life
Dr Schwartz will illustrate this integration with rich case examples that highlight the nuances of clinical practice:

  • Anxiety That Resists Treatment: A client whose persistent anxiety reveals a protector part striving to ensure safety. Parts work illuminates its function, while EMDR addresses the underlying emotional drivers.
  • The Inner Critic and Perfectionism: A client trapped by a relentless need to achieve begins to transform their relationship with their inner critic, maintaining their strengths while easing emotional strain.
  • Fear of Vulnerability: A client who equates vulnerability with danger learns to process early experiences of rejection while developing trust in their protective parts.
  • Self-Sabotage and Procrastination: Competing parts that create frustrating patterns are brought into alignment, fostering clarity and goal-directed behaviour.
  • People-Pleasing and Boundary Challenges: A client discovers how their pleasing tendencies reflect a part’s desire for connection, learning to navigate relationships with healthier boundaries.

These examples bring theory into practice, offering actionable insights for addressing your most challenging cases.

What You Will Learn
By the end of this training, you will:

  • Understand the aetiology and neurobiology of developmental trauma and its impact on emotional fragmentation.
  • Learn to identify and work with protective ego states, including recognising their roles and unmet needs.
  • Integrate EMDR and parts work to address emotional dysregulation, shame, and dissociation in a safe and effective manner.
  • Gain practical tools for stabilising clients, including dyadic resourcing, pendulation, and positive state installation.
  • Develop strategies to help clients anchor their adult self, foster self-compassion, and resolve internal conflicts.
