Delving deep into the dynamics of change brought by transition within romantic, sexual, familial relationships; the workshop aims to impart therapeutic skills to practitioners for supporting not just trans and non-binary clients, but also their partners and family members. The speakers will help the attendees work using the lens of compassion and affirmative practice to support transitioning clients navigate this crucial period of uncertainty and change and will draw on the speakers’ extensive psychotherapeutic experience and contemporary research in the field of gender diversity. At the end of this training workshop, delegates will become confident in:
- Supporting trans and non-binary clients overcome the fear of coming out to their partners
- Supporting the partner/s of a gender-diverse person process the myriad of emotions they might experience as a result of this disclosure
- To understand the dynamics of change brought up by transition within romantic and/or sexual partnerships
- Managing the changing relational dynamics within the relational unit (i.e., couple, throuple, etc)
- Supporting the relational unit explore their sexuality and sexual identity
The overall objective is to increase clinical confidence when working with gender diverse clients and their loved ones.

Kathleen Mates-Youngman, M.A., LMFT, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist/Author/Speaker/Yoga Teacher, with a private practice in Southern California specializing in Couples Therapy. She is the author of best-selling Couples Therapy Workbook: 30 Guided Conversations to Re-Connect Couples, and Family Therapy Workbook: 96 Guided Interventions to Help Families Connect, Cope and Heal. She has conducted a number of seminars on wide-ranging topics including infidelity, repairing ruptured relationships and the Art and Science of Couples Therapy.
She is married with three children and combines real-life experience with clinical expertise to help clients navigate the complex challenges arising in marriage and family life.
Laura Scarrone Bonhomme (MSc Health & Clinical Psy., CPsychol.) is a Clinical Psychologist who trained and developed her career internationally, working in Spain, South America, and the United Kingdom. She specialises in gender and sexual diversity working in a private capacity and, for many years, as part of the NHS Adult Gender Identity Clinic in Charing Cross. She has publications on the therapeutic relationship and challenges faced by transgender and non-binary people. Laura is part of the BPS Gender Diversity Specialist Register, a Member of the British Association of Gender Specialist (BAGIS), and a member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH).
