Understanding and Addressing Compulsive Sexual Behaviours in Couples: A Comprehensive Workshop for Therapists: Video Course

Understanding and Addressing Compulsive Sexual Behaviours in Couples: A Comprehensive Workshop for Therapists: Video Course

Compulsive Sexual Behaviours (CSB) include but are not restricted to compulsive pornography watching, frequent and problematic participation in adult-oriented online platforms, compulsive masturbation, and engaging in numerous sexual encounters, causing distress. These are characterized by the compulsive and repeated living out of sexual acts, urges and fantasies that seem uncontrollable and induce stress, guilt and shame. ICD-11 classifies these behaviours as Impluse Control Disorder, thus delineating CSB from the reductive framework of sex addiction.

These manifestations can often precipitate profound distress within romantic partnerships, eliciting sentiments of betrayal, erosion of trust, and emotional estrangement between partners. Couples grappling with CSB may find themselves caught in a cycle of secrecy, shame, and escalating conflict, ultimately seeking therapy to address the profound impact of these behaviours on their relationship, long term life and overall well-being.

Compulsive sexual behaviours are real problems which bring a lot of distress in people’s lives. But it is not an addiction or a chronic illness. As therapists, we have the tools to equip our clients to re-organise their sexual behaviours and their relational self in a way that is fulfilling for them permanently.

This workshop aims to provide therapists with a multi-dimensional understanding of CSB and equip them with effective strategies for working with couples. Unlike the reductive sex addiction, CSB is conceptualized at this workshop as an impulse control problem intertwined with compulsivity, requiring a nuanced therapeutic approach.

The workshop will commence with an in-depth exploration of CSB, delineating it from the contentious concept of sex/porn addiction. Grounded in Silva Neves’s three-phase method – Regulation, Reprocessing, and Reconstruction – which integrates sexology-informed, ethical, and effective approaches, participants will gain insights into the theoretical underpinnings and treatment modalities of CSB. By debunking the myths surrounding sex addiction, therapists can adopt a more clinically robust and therapeutically helpful perspective on CSB.

Through the adept utilization of case vignettes, this workshop endeavors to illuminate the profound effects of CSB on couples, delving into the sombre aftermath following traumatic discoveries. Within this discourse, the intricate interplay of psychological processes such as grief, disenfranchised grief, and psychosexual dynamics shall be specifically explored. By navigating these complex realms with discernment and sensitivity, therapists are empowered to tailor interventions that resonate with the unique needs of both individuals within the couple dynamic, thereby fostering a path towards holistic healing and relational restoration.

Needless to say, navigating the complexities of couple dynamics in the wake of CSB requires astute assessment and intervention strategies. From evaluating levels of distress to negotiating confidentiality dilemmas, therapists will learn to conduct thorough couple assessments and implement the RAW Assessment Framework. Moreover, Silva Neves’s three-phase model—Regulation, Reprocessing, and Reconstruction—will guide therapists in orchestrating targeted interventions and facilitating couples’ journey towards healing.

Overall, the workshop will delve into effective clinical interventions tailored to address CSB within couples. Through non-confrontational communication strategies, impactful conversations, and reframing corrosive behaviours using concepts like The Drama Triangle, therapists can foster healthier dynamics. Additionally, discussions on forgiveness and the limitations of “full disclosure” processes prevalent in traditional sex addiction recovery programmes will enrich therapists’ therapeutic toolkit.

Throughout the workshop, participants will be encouraged to engage in self-reflection, examining their personal feelings, assumptions, and biases regarding betrayal. By fostering reflexivity and acknowledging their own blind spots, therapists can enhance their professional competence and efficacy in working with couples affected by CSB.

In sum, this workshop offers a comprehensive and intellectually stimulating exploration of working with couples and compulsive sexual behaviours. By integrating research-backed insights, practical strategies, and opportunities for self-reflection, therapists and psychologists are poised to deepen their understanding and effectiveness in addressing this complex therapeutic terrain.
