Addiction Recovery: Active mind-body interventions – Empowering clients to make rapid breakthrough and lasting change: Video Course
Addiction Recovery: Active mind-body interventions – Empowering clients to make rapid breakthrough and lasting change: Video Course
As therapists, when we can clearly see the disruptive toll addiction is taking on the physical, mental and emotional well-being of our clients and their loved ones; the slippery and sluggish pace of recovery can seem frustrating even to the most patient among us. We understand how trauma, chronic stress, PTSD, and even genetic predisposition can contribute to this crippling chemical dependency in our clients. In our therapy sessions, we often see how despite being aware of the damaging outcomes of addiction, our clients find it hard to make steady progress. The re-wiring of the brain caused by the dopamine release and its strong pleasurable effect experienced in addictive behaviours by our clients, makes recovery a slippery slope.

Underlying nervous system dysregulation is often at the root of both addiction and anxiety. Clients tend to avoid situations altogether, or numb themselves with regulating substances and behaviours that only worsen their own shame and struggles, internally and externally. Addressing self-regulation issues that often underlie these problems with mind-body techniques is an excellent complement to existing therapies that clients may already be exploring.
Mind-body interventions are now increasingly being used as a critical component for recovery from addiction and will very likely play a vital role in addiction recovery programmes in the future. Why? Because newer research suggests that a body-centered approach that looks at the mind-body connection is key to addiction recovery.
In this intellectually-stimluating and practically-oriented workshop by renowned therapist and prolific author Chris Willard, we will explore mind-body related approaches to addiction, including:
- Mindfulness
- Positive psychology
- Movement
- Somatic Enhancing Therapy
- Cognitive Behviour Therapy
- ACT
New active approach to help clients act their way into news ways of thinking, rather than think their way into new ways of acting empowers clients with rapid change they can see and feel for themselves. Borrowing from cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavioral, ACT, mindfulness and a range of body-based practices, this workshop will empower clinicians and their clients to make rapid change and breakthroughs.
We will explore the scientific underpinnings of meditation, movement and other related practices as we practice these techniques for ourselves and learn to share them effectively in therapy.
This practically-oriented workshop is beneficial to psychotherapists, psychologists and counsellors who interface with addiction and anxiety; and are seeking new, result-oriented skills in their repertoire for these challenging and persistent issues. We will access these practical tools and gain the confidence to share these tools with clients and their loved ones.
Both anxiety and addiction are frequently the source of shame and secrecy, preventing clients from even admitting their struggles to themselves. These powerful practices help shake off shame and move clients toward healing and recovery, regaining lost control over their lives.
