Compassionate Companions: Supporting Partners of CSA Survivors: Video Course
The echoes of past trauma often linger, subtly shaping the contours of adulthood. For survivors of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and their partners, this journey is marked by moments of both profound connection and profound challenge. It’s within the intricacies of relationships—moments of intimacy, vulnerability, and shared experiences—that the reverberations of past trauma can be most keenly felt. As survivors navigate the complexities of healing, partners find themselves drawn into a delicate dance of empathy and understanding, grappling with their own emotions and uncertainties.
In this immersive workshop, we delve deep into the heart of these complexities, offering a holistic exploration of the challenges faced by survivors and their partners as they navigate the terrain of healing and connection.

Partners often find themselves standing on shifting ground, unsure of how best to support their loved ones amidst the tumultuous and unexpected assault of emotions and memories. The journey of healing is not a linear path; rather, it is marked by peaks and valleys – moments which can mark significant progress as well as intense retreats. Partners may witness their loved ones grappling with hypervigilance, their senses heightened to the slightest hint of danger, or emotional dysregulation, where even the gentlest touch can evoke a flood of memories and emotions. Fear of sexual intimacy may cast a shadow over the relationship, as survivors struggle to trust and feel safe in sexual intimacy with their partners. Moreover, struggles around setting boundaries and saying no, approval seeking, mind reading, and difficulties in relaxing and experiencing pleasure can further complicate the journey.
Yet, amidst these challenges lie opportunities for profound growth and connection.
Our course is meticulously designed to provide partners with the insights and tools needed to navigate these turbulent waters with grace and resilience. Through a blend of psychoeducation, experiential learning, and compassionate support, partners will gain a deeper understanding of the survivor’s journey, learning to navigate the complexities of trauma and its impact on relational dynamics. Through psychoeducation, partners will be empowered to link relational, intimacy, and sexual challenges to past experiences, identifying triggers, and contextualizing confusing behaviour, thereby alleviating feelings of responsibility, unworthiness, shame, rejection, or feeling overwhelmed.
The webinar will also explore how partners can support survivors in pivotal moments, such as disclosing abuse to family, friends, or professionals, or confronting the abuser. It’s crucial to discuss these scenarios in advance and mutually agree on how to navigate them, especially if the survivor wishes to maintain contact with the abuser or have access to grandchildren. Furthermore, therapists play a pivotal role in helping partners identify their own childhood experiences and how these shape their present behaviours and relationship dynamics. By understanding these patterns, partners can better navigate their own emotional journey alongside their loved ones.
