This two-part video course pack offers an in-depth exploration of the Polyvagal Theory, emphasizing its application in somatic psychology and its pivotal role in trauma recovery. Combining the foundational insights of Polyvagal Theory with practical, embodied approaches, this course pack provides therapists with actionable strategies for helping clients navigate complex trauma, regulate their nervous systems, and foster healing.
This video resource pack contains two complete workshops (CPD hours: 5) that cover:
Course 1: Applied Polyvagal Theory in Somatic Psychology: An Embodied Approach to Trauma Recovery (CPD: 3 / CE: N/A)
In the first course, Dr Arielle Schwartz introduces participants to the profound integration of Polyvagal Theory into somatic therapies. This approach highlights how the body must be an active participant in trauma recovery. By blending polyvagal insights with yoga-based practices, movement, and body awareness, therapists are equipped to help clients achieve lasting relief from trauma-related conditions such as anxiety, depression, and mood disorders.
What You Will Learn:
- How to fine-tune clients’ autonomic nervous systems, supporting them in releasing chronic stress and trauma from the body.
- Practical techniques for integrating yogic breath, movement, and awareness practices into therapy to enhance emotional and physical well-being.
- Tools to stimulate the vagus nerve and enhance vagal tone, fostering resilience and long-term recovery.
Key Topics:
- The Essentials of Polyvagal Theory and its relevance in understanding nervous system states.
- Somatic tools for regulating the nervous system, including proximity awareness, co-regulation, and vagus nerve stimulation.
- How to blend “top-down” and “bottom-up” interventions to offer holistic, body-centered healing strategies.
Course 2: Polyvagal Theory: A Science of Safety (CPD: 2 / CE: N/A)
Dr Stephen Porges, the originator of Polyvagal Theory, delves deeper into the science of how our autonomic nervous system influences mental health, social engagement, and our sense of safety. This course explains the groundbreaking concept of neuroception and how the body evaluates risk and safety, influencing both pro-social and defensive behaviors.
What You Will Learn:
- The significance of neuroception in assessing environmental risk and triggering adaptive neural circuits.
- How deficits in regulating the Social Engagement System relate to various behavioral and psychiatric disorders.
- Techniques to enhance co-regulation within the Social Engagement System, improving clinical outcomes in trauma therapy.
Key Topics:
- The relationship between autonomic regulation, mental health, and behavioral patterns.
- How sociality acts as a potent neuromodulator, influencing physiological and emotional states.
- Practical strategies for rewiring autonomic responses, helping clients return to a state of safety and connection.
Learning Objectives Across Both Courses:
By combining these two video courses, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the polyvagal perspective and its clinical applications, enabling them to:
- Explain how to fine-tune the nervous system moment-by-moment, aiding clients in releasing chronic stress
- Apply rapid stress-reduction techniques and effective nervous system regulation methods
- Teach clients natural ways to stimulate their vagus nerve, enhancing physical and emotional health
- Discuss how a neural process, neuroception, evaluates risk in the environment and triggers adaptive neural circuits to promote either social interactions or defensive behaviours
- Explain how deficits in the regulation of the Social Engagement System relate to the core features of several behavioural and psychiatric disorders
Who Should Attend: This course pack is designed for therapists, counselors, and mental health practitioners who work with trauma survivors, clients with anxiety and mood disorders, and individuals seeking to enhance their emotional and physical well-being through body-centered practices.
This video course pack offers a unique opportunity to deepen your knowledge of the polyvagal framework and integrate somatic tools into your therapeutic practice. With expert guidance from both Dr Arielle Schwartz and Dr Stephen Porges, you will be empowered to facilitate profound healing in your clients by addressing the physiological roots of trauma and promoting a state of safety and connection.
