Full course information

You’ve got ideas worth sharing—but how do you transform them from private reflections into a published work that makes an impact in the current digital and print landscape? Whether you want to write a book, publish an article, or launch a blog or newsletter, this workshop will take you from thinking about writing to actually writing–and leave you with a plan to complete your work.

Led by Babette Rothschild, a bestselling author and Deborah Malmud, a senior publishing executive with decades of insider experience, this hands-on webinar bridges the gap between inspiration and execution. We’ll explore how journaling and reflective writing—often used as self-care—can also seed publishable ideas. You’ll learn how to identify your audience and discern what stays private and what can be reshaped into articles, op-eds, or books, balancing vulnerability with professional boundaries in public writing.

Writers often say that “everything is grist for the mill.” In that vein we’ll also look at how writing through personal and professional difficulties can become the raw material for meaningful work, drawing inspiration from self-care practices that can steady you when life gets overwhelming.

The workshop will include a concise overview of the core building blocks of professional writing (audience, genre, publishing options) as well as experiential activities—guided prompts, mini writing exercises, and short reflections.

We’ll also discuss the landscape of emerging short-form platforms—blogs, newsletters, LinkedIn, Substack, Medium—so even if you don’t use them yet, you’ll understand how they can serve as on-ramps for visibility, connection, and credibility.

You’ll leave the two days with concrete next steps, clarity on your project, and a plan to bring your words into the world.

Important Note on Course Focus

In this workshop, you will use personal experiences as a starting point for reflection and writing. It is important to note that the focus will be on neutral, positive, or moderately challenging experiences only—moments that are meaningful but manageable to write about in this time-limited setting.

Please remember: this is a writing and professional development course, not a substitute for therapy. The aim is to provide a safe, supportive space to practice writing, spark new ideas, and explore how personal reflection can grow into publishable work.

Additionally we will interweave the following “hot topic” concepts in the course:

  • Navigating AI in publishing without losing your authentic voice.
  • Building visibility in a fast-changing attention economy.
  • Balancing professional credibility with personal storytelling.
  • Writing with cultural sensitivity and global reach.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Use journaling and reflective writing for both self-care and to generate ideas for public writing.
  • Distinguish between private writing and public writing and decide what to adapt for publication.
  • Apply strategies for writing through personal and professional difficulties as a tool for resilience and expression.
  • Identify the genre that best aligns with their goals.
  • Narrow and refine their topic into a compelling concept.
  • Define and research their ideal readership.
  • Explore multiple publishing platforms—from traditional publishers to Substack, Medium, and hybrid options.
  • Construct a project outline, realistic timeline, and individual writing practice plan.
